Outfit Details: Dress | Faux Fur Coat | Louis Vuitton Minaudiere (similar: here) | Carrson Heels (in silver)
One of my favorite holidays is coming up — New Years Eve! For me, this holiday is all about one feeling: anticipation. Some people are anticipating the new year and all the untold possibilities. Others are simply anticipating a kiss with that special someone. There’s a certain magic in the air on New Years Eve that I don’t experience on any other holiday. I’ve been thinking about what to wear for New Years Eve and I decided to share my ideas with you.
Each New Years Eve experience has been different for me. There were some years that I chose to stay at home and other times that I went out with my girlfriends. A few times in the past, I was invited to a very classy gala. New Years Eve is the last party of the holiday season and literally the last moment of 2016 that I can dress up for. I always want to put the previous 364 days to shame! You might think that sparkles and sequins are the makings of a great New Years Eve outfit, but it’s not that simple. When I’m planning what to wear for New Years Eve, I must take the evening’s activities into consideration.
How fancy you want to get depends on what you’re actually doing to celebrate the holiday. When deciding what to wear for New Years Eve, first consider the locale. Are you going to a house party? Are you attending a sophisticated event? Believe it or not, you can be overdressed for New Years Eve, so proceed with caution.
There’s also plenty of good reasons to skip dressing up entirely. A few of those good reasons are Netflix, popcorn and pajamas. Sometimes it just feels good to ring in the New Year from the comfort of your own sofa. Added bonuses: no traffic, no crowds and fewer germs (it’s flu season!). On a laid-back evening such as this, deciding what to wear for New Years Eve is probably a lot easier!
There are so many different opportunities for New Years Eve and I want to be ready for whatever life throws my way. I love each of these New Years Eve outfit ideas for their uniqueness, and if you rock one of these looks, you’ll definitely stand out!
What to Wear for New Years Eve: Attending a Gala
I once attended a gala where all the women were wearing dazzling gowns and all the men were wearing suits with black ties. It was like something out of a fairytale! The event was focused on opera, with other forms of entertainment and some delicious food and drinks. The best part was ringing in the New Year in extra dressy clothes, and this one-of-a-kind experience left an impression on me.
Are you attending a prestigious and classy New Years Eve event? It’s time to up your style game. I put together this look knowing that many people will choose sequins and black in their New Years Eve outfits. If I am invited to a fancy New Years Eve event this year, I think I’ll stand out in these unusual textures and colors. The coat I styled in these photos is quite warm, which is appropriate for the weather, but it’s also positively luxurious! The rose-grey color of the coat is very feminine, balancing out the faux fur that speaks so loudly. It’s a head-turner for sure.
I chose this dress because of the ornate silver beading. It’s exciting to wear something so sexy and I think silver is the perfect color for New Years Eve. The heels follow this trend — more silver with small, eye-catching details. If you’re looking for advice on what to wear for New Years Eve at a glamorous event, I’ll always recommend fur and silver!

What to Wear for New Years Eve: Going Out with Friends
A fancy gala certainly has its selling points, but there’s something special about a night out among friends and acquaintances. I’ve had some unforgettable experiences celebrating the New Year with my gal pals. One time, I was invited to a party that was inside an office building on Times Square. It was so much fun watching the ball drop from up high! What a unique point of view on the New Year.
When considering what to wear for New Years Eve with friends, I always go for party dress that is equal parts bold and chic. This is an example of the type of outfit I typically put together for New Years Eve. I wish I could wear black sequinned pants year-round, but until I start my new job as a cabaret dancer, it’ll have to be just once a year. This black halter top is loose-fitting and has a silky look to it. It bounces and swings with a carefree spirit, honoring the prevailing attitude on New Years Eve. Sleek black pumps and a quirky New Years Eve headband tie it all together.
What to Wear for New Years Eve: Staying In
Not every holiday celebration necessitates glitz, glam and going out on the town. Occasionally, something unexpected comes up that prevents you from executing New Years Eve plans. Maybe you’re just looking to kick back for a change. For me, it’s been a long time since I stayed home on New Years Eve. I always seem to have plans! I love celebrating with my friends but I also secretly enjoy a comfier New Years Eve. As of right now, though, I have no plans for January 31st.
If I end up staying home this year, it becomes a bit simpler to decide what to wear for New Years Eve. Bring me my slippers! I love to cozy up by the fireplace in a comfy hat with a super soft wrap. Instead of watching the ball drop in person, I can watch the ball drop on television and enjoy all the amenities of home. It doesn’t get any better than a pajama party in my own house!
New Years Eve is about anticipation, but it’s also about contemplation. What have I accomplished this year? What do I want to create in my life next year? Deciding what to wear for New Years Eve could be one of your contemplations — but don’t stress out about it too much! After all, there’s still the task of choosing a New Years resolution (and keeping it!).
